METHADONE ASSISTED TREATMENT (MAT)

Methadone is a medication approved by the FDA to treat opioid use disorder (OUD). When taken as prescribed, methadone is safe and effective. Methadone helps individuals achieve and sustain recovery and to reclaim active and meaningful lives. Methadone is one component of a comprehensive treatment plan, which includes counseling and other behavioral health therapies to provide patients with a whole-person approach.

Suboxone (Buprenorphine and Naloxone) is an effective mediation approved by the FDA to treat opioid use disorder (OUD). It contains Buprenorphine and Naloxone.  This combination manages cravings and withdrawals while decreasing the risk of misuse. The Buprenorphine only form is available for pregnant women. Both forms should be used as part of a comprehensive management program that includes psychosocial support.

Sublocade is a monthly injection that contains buprenorphine. It is available only after clients have been in treatment with a transmucosal form of buprenorphine such as Suboxone for a minimum amount of time.  It helps with reducing opioid cravings and withdrawal symptoms while decreasing the risk of misuse. Sublocade should be used as part of a comprehensive plan along with psychosocial support.

Vivitrol (Naltrexone) is a monthly injection that is a non-addictive medication used to treat alcohol dependence and prevent opioid relapse. Clients must stop drinking alcohol and taking opioids for a minimum amount of time before receiving Vivitrol.  Vivitrol blocks the effects of opioids. Any attempts to overcome the blocking effects by taking opioids may lead to serious injury, coma, or death. Vivitrol works best as part of a comprehensive plan that includes psychosocial support.
